What is the IDEAS?

The IDEAS is a computer program that manages indices. An index is a list of bibliographical information and analysis that serves as a pointer to author, subject, publication, abstract, and keycode of the piece of information. An index is encoded in the computer using the IDEAS.

The IDEAS:

  1. accepts encoding of indices and the subsequent editions of the entries;
  2. automatically classifies edited indices;
  3. allows users to retrieve indices through various search methods;
  4. manages the IBON thesaurus and collection.

The current two years of the IDEAS is uploaded in the internet, in the website called IDEAS online.

What is the IBON Thesaurus?

The IBON Thesaurus is the developed language (the list of keycodes) used to search for pieces of information on socio-economics. Instead of using author, subject or publications in searching the IDEAS, researchers may use keycodes that correspond to their specific topics.

What is the IBON Collection?

The IBON Collection is the list of source materials. It refers to the database of the IDEAS as well as the hard copies and digital files of the source materials stored in the IBON Databank.

Aside from its collection, what should be the products of a Databank?

The IBON Databank comes up with the List of Possible Issues (fortnightly), Info Kit (every two weeks), and Trends Monitor (monthly).

The List of Possible Issues, as the term suggests, is an enumeration of the issues of the day that may be burning in the near future. The Info Kit is a compilation of reference material,s statements, releases, videos, etc. related to an issue identified in the List of Possible Issues. The Trends Monitor may be a list of materials and statistics on an already burning issue or an article detailing the analysis of current trends and issues.

Who can be a member of the NDN?

Existing databanks with regional or sectoral focus may be part of the NDN. Their existing collections are evaluated and their data retrieval systems are made compatible with the IDEAS.

Regional or sectoral organizations and alliances that are planning to set up their own databanks and link up with the NDN are also welcome. IBON gives training seminars on databanking and sets up the initial database using the IDEAS. For more details on the training, please refer to the IBON Module on Information Management and Advocacy.

In some cases where regional organizations or alliances request to be part of the NDN but do not have the resources to set up their own databanks, IBON may opt to set up a regional branch of the IBON Databank.
